Our Grade 1 Curriculum

This is what we have so far for our Grade 1 curriculum. If the link isn't highlighted then it's likely an item listed in it's appropriate category in our Amazon store here.

I'm in the process of adding links to everything and adding new curriculum we recently started.

Grade 1 Language Arts:

"Handwriting without Tears" - main handwriting curriculum, orange book and yellow book.

"Handwriting without Tears" - iPad App

Daily 6-Trait Writing Workbook (Evan-Moor Publishing)

Wordly Wise 3000 - Grade 1 Vocabulary Building (haven't started this yet)

Explode the Code books 1 through 3

BOB Books

Animal Antics Readers

"The Reading Lesson: Teach your child to read in 20 easy lessons" by Michael Levin

Lots of read-aloud books!

Making books about topics we are learning about.

Grade 1 Math:

Horizon Math - main curriculum   Changed over to Math Made Easy by DK publishing, which is Mastery based. Think we may go the Singapore route with the rest of elementary math.

Manipulatives such as cuisinaire rods, play money, fraction tiles, geometric tiles, etc.

Mighty Mind Game

Jungle Coins iPad App - learning Canadian coinage

Grade 1 Social Studies:

"My First Primary Mapping Book" (Apple Press)

"Mapping Skills for Grade 1" e-book workbook (Teacher Created Resources)

"Our Community" (Apple Press)

"Beginning Geography" (Evan Moor)

Discovery Education Video on applicable topics (safety, careers, daily changes, weather, etc). We use Discovery Education Video's A LOT. My son is a very visual learner, if he could learn everything he needs to learn by watching about it on a DVD he'd be a happy camper. I love this resource and I'm thankful we have access to it for free through our homeschool academy that we are enrolled with. These videos have been making up a good chunk of our learning time lately. We recently watched video's on a virtual exploration of Western Canada and the Arctic and learned about the geography and culture of both area's.

Grade 1 Science

"A Reason for Science" Grade 1 - don't really like this curriculum, it's not very engaging (black and white and fill in the blanks is the majority of it) so I'm looking for something different.   Switched over to Apologia Science, Exploring Creation with Astronomy with junior notebooking journal.

Discovery Education Video on applicable topics (life cycles, needs of living things, forces of motion, etc.)

"So that's how the moon changes shape!" by Allan Fowler

Science Journal - he draws and writes (copy work) what we're learning about.

Grade 1 Bible

Looking into A Beka Flash-a-card series.

"Everything a Child Should Know about God" by Kenneth Taylor (Amazing resource! Out of print! Found mine on Ebay)

"Big Truths for Little Kids" by Susan Hunt

"The Best Thing is Love" by Dandi Daley Mackall

"Baby Boy Bible"

"5 Minute Devotions for Children: Stories from the Old Testament" by Pamela Kennedy
